Make sure they are plugged in all of the way to your pc. I had a problem with my speakers not too long ago. I realized the metal part that plugs into the pc was slightly bent from pulling on the pc with a short speaker cord. Just the slightest kink in it made my speakers not work, and I had to buy a new set.

Actually, yeap, the sound is turned on and the speakers are plugged in all the way. I've tried troubleshooting, defragmenting my hard drive (suggested in a tech forum). I don't know what's wrong with them. When you first turn on the computer, all you hear is like static sometimes, then no sound at all. I thought the computers might be blown, but I tried them on another computer and they worked fine. |

Before you rip apart your PC I want you to try something simple. I assume you are using win xp so I will tell you what to try with that operating system. But before I get into that I want you to check the connections. make sure the audio plug is firmly connected into the audio jack on your pc. Sometimes that plug can get pulled out a bit and that would explain why you hear static. If the connections look ok and everything is hooked up properly then we will try step 2.
Click start, go to my computer and highlight it. RIGHT click on my computer, select properties. When the system properties window opens find the hardware tab. In that tab you should see a button which says "Device manager", click on that. Look for the "View" tab on the device manager window and then click on "Show hidden devices". Do you see any yellow question marks? If you do then there is a problem. If you don't then what we want to do is find your audio, it should be listed as "sound, video and game controllers". After you open up that tab go back to the "view" tab and uncheck "show hidden devices".
Ok in this list you should see your audio codecs. Now before you delete anything you have to tell me if you have a sound card or built in audio. In either case you will need the install CD that has the audio codecs on it. Highlight anything that has "audio" in the description and right click on them. (one at a time). Some will have the option to let you uninstall the device and others will not. Uninstall the ones that let you uninstall them. The other ones will say "Update driver, scan for hardware changes or properties". Don't worry about those for now. When you uninstall the devices your pc will say it needs to reboot. Make sure you only uninstall the audio. Uninstall what you can and restart.
When your pc reboots it will search for the audio and it should find it. When it does it might ask you for the install cd with the audio codecs on them or windows might install the codecs automatically. In any case reinstall your audio and then go to the control panel. Find the sound and audio devices button and open it. When that new window opens go to the sound tab and see if your sound came back by highlighting something in the program events window and clicking on the "play sound" button. If all goes well you should have your sound back.
Before you do any of the uninstalling tho I'd like for you to tell me exactly what operating system you are using and if you have a soundcard or integrated audio in your motherboard. If you can't find that out or if you don't know then make a post telling me. We can go through this slowly and I will talk you through it, step by step. I build PC's so I am familiar with most setups and I am sure I can help you.
